In the span of just a few weeks, two things happened that perfectly capture the strange moment we’re in when it comes to women’s health and brain health:
It’s not surprising to see excitement building around hormones again. The scientific tide has turned. We now understand that estradiol is not just a reproductive hormone—it’s a master regulator of the female brain, vascular system, bones, and immune health.
In other words: sex hormones are brain hormones.
But for nearly 20 years, women were denied this understanding. The WHI study’s flawed interpretation created decades of fear around HRT—despite later re-analyses showing significant benefits when therapy is started around the time of menopause.
Now, major publications are finally printing what many of us in functional and precision medicine have known for years.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is what happened with the Bredesen article.
In the NYT piece on reversing cognitive decline, half the comments expressed open disbelief. Many ridiculed the notion that personalized, systems-based medicine could actually help reverse mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s.
Some declared the entire approach to be “snake oil” or “placebo.” Others clung to the idea that if Big Pharma hasn’t solved dementia, nothing else possibly could.
This reveals a deep bias in how we (still) think about medicine:
But here’s the truth: we are already seeing improvement in real people using this model. Not in everyone. Not all the time. But enough to say: the era of “nothing can be done” is over.
So what do we make of this?
We don’t need just new headlines. We need new frameworks.
They need to know that:
At my clinic and through The Aruna Method™, I work with midlife women to:
I also host weekly drop-in office hours every Monday from 12–1 PT. If you’ve read this far and want to ask a quick question, see if my programs might be right for you, or just connect—reply to this post or send me a DM for the Zoom link.
There’s a reason we call menopause “the change.”
It’s not just about the end of reproductive years. It’s about a neuroendocrine and metabolic transformation that—if ignored—can derail our health.
But if we meet it with the right strategy? It can be the beginning of your most powerful years.
Let’s not wait for the headlines to catch up. Let’s get started now.
