🧠 Hormones, Brains & Bias: What We Miss When the Media Gets It Half Right

In the span of just a few weeks, two things happened that perfectly capture the strange moment we’re in when it comes to women’s health and brain health:

  1. The The New York Times and Nature Magazine published long-overdue pieces acknowledging that hormone therapy—particularly estrogen—isn’t the villain it was made out to be. Instead, it may be one of the most powerful tools we have for protecting the aging female brain.
  2. The same The New York Times ran a profile on Dr. Dale Bredesen’s protocol for reversing early dementia—and the 550+ public comments that followed revealed deep skepticism, even disdain, for the idea that diet, lifestyle, hormone balance, and root-cause medicine could have anything meaningful to offer.

The Disconnect: When Good News Makes Headlines, But Good Protocols Get Mocked

It’s not surprising to see excitement building around hormones again. The scientific tide has turned. We now understand that estradiol is not just a reproductive hormone—it’s a master regulator of the female brain, vascular system, bones, and immune health.

In other words: sex hormones are brain hormones.

  • See the video I released on my YouTube channel I just released HERE.

But for nearly 20 years, women were denied this understanding. The WHI study’s flawed interpretation created decades of fear around HRT—despite later re-analyses showing significant benefits when therapy is started around the time of menopause.

Now, major publications are finally printing what many of us in functional and precision medicine have known for years.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is what happened with the Bredesen article.

When Readers Can’t See the Forest

In the NYT piece on reversing cognitive decline, half the comments expressed open disbelief. Many ridiculed the notion that personalized, systems-based medicine could actually help reverse mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s.

Some declared the entire approach to be “snake oil” or “placebo.” Others clung to the idea that if Big Pharma hasn’t solved dementia, nothing else possibly could.

This reveals a deep bias in how we (still) think about medicine:

  • If it’s not a single pill, it must not work.
  • If it takes effort—changing how we eat, sleep, manage stress, or treat root causes—it must not be real.
  • And if the protocol isn’t widely accepted yet, then we can safely ignore the mounting case studies and the lived experience of recovering patients.

But here’s the truth: we are already seeing improvement in real people using this model. Not in everyone. Not all the time. But enough to say: the era of “nothing can be done” is over.

Media Is Catching Up… But Slowly, and Selectively

So what do we make of this?

  • We celebrate that hormone therapy is finally being vindicated.
  • We hold space for the fact that groundbreaking work—like Dr. Bredesen’s protocol—is often met with resistance, even hostility, when it challenges the status quo.
  • And we recognize that media often follows, not leads.

We don’t need just new headlines. We need new frameworks.

They need to know that:

  • HRT is not just about hot flashes—it’s about preventing cognitive decline, bone loss, cardiovascular disease, and emotional depletion.
  • Dementia is not a mysterious bolt of lightning from the sky. It is, in many cases, a preventable, multi-causal, and modifiable condition.
  • Functional and precision medicine are not “fringe”—they are what happens when medicine gets curious, compassionate, and comprehensive.

What I’m Doing About It

At my clinic and through The Aruna Method™, I work with midlife women to:

  • Optimize hormones and brain function,
  • Address root causes of fatigue, depression, or brain fog,
  • And create truly personalized strategies for thriving in the second half of life.

I also host weekly drop-in office hours every Monday from 12–1 PT. If you’ve read this far and want to ask a quick question, see if my programs might be right for you, or just connect—reply to this post or send me a DM for the Zoom link.

Final Thought

There’s a reason we call menopause “the change.”

It’s not just about the end of reproductive years. It’s about a neuroendocrine and metabolic transformation that—if ignored—can derail our health.

But if we meet it with the right strategy? It can be the beginning of your most powerful years.

Let’s not wait for the headlines to catch up. Let’s get started now.

With love,
